Unlocking Creativity In Diverse Teams: Discover The Power Of The Multicultural Paradox Mindset (Mpm) In Your Law Firm
August 18, 2023
Diverse teams in the workplace can face challenges in coordination due to divergent views. However, researchers from the Georgia Institute of Technology suggest that embracing a multicultural paradox mindset (MPM) is the key to effectively managing diversity. MPM refers to being accepting of and energized by intercultural tensions while finding common ground.
High MPM enables team members to embrace differences rather than ignore them, allowing for effective expression and increased creativity. To test their theory, the researchers formed 63 diverse teams, ensuring cultural diversity by clustering participants rather than using geographic locations. The teams were presented with a scenario involving work-from-home arrangements for employees with aging relatives, and they had to generate creative HR solutions based on the given information.
The study considered variables such as individual definitions of creativity, gender diversity, overseas experience, and the acceptance of different cultures among team members from “tight” and “loose” cultural backgrounds. The researchers found that having team members with high MPM significantly enhanced creative potential.
The research emphasizes the importance of having individuals with a multicultural paradox mindset in multicultural teams, as they can unlock the team’s creative potential. Leaders should be mindful of this trait when assembling diverse teams to ensure effective collaboration and productivity. By embracing diversity and managing intercultural tensions through MPM, teams can tap into the benefits of information elaboration and creativity inherent in diverse groups.
