Building Community and Wellness in Law Firms With Return-to-Office Strategy

In a recent piece for Attorney at Work, Andrew Raines, founder of Raines Feldman Littrell LLP, argues that law firms must look beyond logistics when planning their return-to-office strategy. Based on his experience leading a 100-plus attorney firm across seven cities, Raines contends the true challenge is ensuring the office fosters well-being, connection, and engagement rather than stress and disconnection.

The article notes that office design has a direct impact on law firm wellness. Spaces dominated by either open layouts or isolated cubicles often fall short; instead, offices should provide flexible environments that are suited for both collaboration and deep focus. His firm integrates central “town squares” into each office to promote community and informal interaction, while still allowing for individualized work styles.

Mentorship and community-building programs further reinforce this philosophy. Raines describes how structured mentorship across offices has helped align attorneys’ goals with measurable outcomes, strengthening ties across all levels. Likewise, initiatives ranging from stress-management presentations to cross-office yoga sessions underscore a culture of well-being.

Raines also challenges the superficial “we’re a family” rhetoric common in many firms. He argues instead for a “one firm” approach grounded in respect, transparency, and inclusivity. Trust is built not through slogans but by consistently supporting employees as whole people, recognizing their lives beyond billable hours.

A successful return-to-office strategy is not just a compliance exercise. Firms that prioritize wellness, cultivate genuine community, and design flexible, supportive spaces will not only mitigate burnout but also enhance collaboration, retention, and long-term performance.
