Embracing Gen AI in Legal Project Management
January 19, 2024
Over the past year, there has been significant growth in the field of artificial intelligence (AI), with increased adoption in various sectors, including the legal industry, according to an article by Law Vision. Although AI has been a part of the legal profession for almost three decades, recent developments, specifically in Generative AI (Gen AI), have generated increased interest and cautious optimism.
The legal industry, known for its fast-paced and dynamic nature, sees AI as increasingly essential for staying ahead of the curve. Gen AI refers to AI that can produce new content, such as text, audio, and images, based on instructions and data. For legal, that translates into the ability to generate new and relevant content, such as arguments for court, contracts, or summaries, optimizing human creativity. Traditional forms of AI have already demonstrated substantial productivity gains in law firms, but Gen AI introduces capabilities for creating content not present in existing data.
Gartner predicts that AI may replace 80% of project management activities by 2030, and Gen AI is expected to significantly impact legal project management. While emphasizing the importance of leveraging AI rather than replacing human roles, the blog explores various opportunities for using Gen AI in legal project management. This includes areas like predictive analytics, automation of repetitive tasks, and optimization of client communication.
Despite the advancements in AI, the role of Legal Project Managers (LPMs) remains crucial, especially in areas requiring interpersonal and relational skills, such as stakeholder and risk management. Gen AI’s proficiency in data analysis and predictive analytics is highlighted, offering major efficiencies for LPMs at both the matter and portfolio levels. The tool can streamline repetitive tasks, automate data analysis, and assist in visualizing key transaction data points.
Furthermore, Gen AI proves valuable in summarization, document review, and drafting. It can analyze visual data, extract key insights, and even suggest language improvements, saving time and potentially reducing the risk of human error. The conclusion emphasizes the transformative potential of Gen AI in legal project management, positioning law firms as innovators and emphasizing the importance of experimentation and continuous learning to adapt to the evolving legal landscape.
