Overcoming Barriers to Law Firm Business Development
Business development is a persistent challenge for lawyers, often less because of capability than hesitation. Writing for JD Supra Perspectives, Rebecca Edwards Hnatowski highlights findings from a LinkedIn poll on the most common barriers holding lawyers back. The responses reflect four primary concerns: not knowing where to start, discomfort with self-promotion, lack of immediate results, and fear of rejection. Each stems from uncertainty, a flawed mindset, or a lack of structure, rather than a lack of intelligence or skill.
The most frequent hesitation, reported by 43% of respondents in a flash poll conducted by Hnatowski, was not knowing where to begin. With endless possibilities such as writing, networking, or posting online, many attorneys feel paralyzed. Hnatowski notes that breaking goals into small, concrete actions helps build momentum. Nearly a third of respondents cited discomfort with self-promotion, often due to fear of appearing boastful. She recommends reframing business development as a helping process, providing useful information or connections rather than “selling.”
Twenty-one percent identified the absence of immediate results as discouraging, but business development is a long-term endeavor. Short-term wins, such as new connections or a client coffee, should be recognized as progress. Finally, 7% acknowledged a fear of rejection, which Hnatowski frames as part of the process, citing research that shows persistence across multiple outreach attempts is essential.
Business development challenges can be mitigated through structure, encouragement, and a positive culture. Supporting small, consistent actions not only alleviates lawyer hesitation but also helps shift the firm’s growth strategy from daunting to achievable. Over time, these habits build confidence, resilience, and sustainable client relationships.
