Webinar Explores Challenges for Law Firms and Corporate Legal Departments

Law firms and corporate legal departments are working to better align their expectations and approaches to providing legal services, with a focus on building strong relationships, understanding each other’s needs, and adopting billing and pricing models that reflect value rather than just time spent.

These were some of the key talking points from a recent webinar hosted by ACEDS, the Association of Certified E-Discovery Specialists, and Today’s Managing Partner, entitled “What’s Keeping Legal Leadership Up at Night? A Candid Conversation Between GCs and Law Firm Leaders.” ACEDS and Today’s Managing Partner announced their strategic partnership on June 16, 2025.

The webinar featured panelists Eric Dodson Greenberg, Executive Vice President and General Counsel & Corporate Secretary at Cox Media Group; Scott C. Pappas, Firmwide Managing Partner at Omnus Law; Mike Ryan, Executive Vice President and Chief Legal Officer at Trading Technologies; and Courtney Gahm-Oldman, Partner at Frost Brown Todd. Michael Quartararo, President of ACEDS, moderated the conversation.

Key takeaways for law firms and corporate legal departments included:

  • Artificial intelligence (AI): Both law firms and corporate legal departments see AI as a major concern and opportunity. AI tools can support tasks like pattern recognition and contract review, but there are also risks around ethics, data security, and the misuse of outputs.
  • Cybersecurity and data privacy: Law firms are increasingly attractive targets for phishing, ransomware, and other cyber threats. Both sides are working to enhance physical and digital security measures.
  • Rapid change in legal technology: The pace of innovation in legal processes is both exciting and challenging. Staying ahead of the curve while mitigating risks requires embracing innovation carefully and strategically.
  • Evolving role of legal professionals: As AI transforms traditional legal tasks, opportunities are emerging for lawyers to take on more strategic, value-added work. At the same time, senior lawyers especially need to adapt their skills and approaches to remain effective.
