How AI-Savvy Legal Clients Are Reshaping Expectations for Law Firms

According to an article by Bryce Tarling of Clio, legal clients are increasingly using AI tools to research issues before contacting a lawyer, a trend that now shapes how firms are hired and how matters begin. Tarling notes that more than half of surveyed consumers say they have used or would use AI to answer legal questions, largely because these tools are fast, accessible, and perceived as private. As a result, clients often approach firms with far more baseline knowledge and some misconceptions than in past years.

Tarling highlights that client decisions are already being influenced by these tools. Some consumers report feeling that AI answered their question sufficiently, while others were encouraged to contact a lawyer or to abandon an issue entirely. This influence is further complicated by general-purpose AI risks, including hallucinations and outdated legal references, which can create misunderstandings that lawyers must correct.

At the same time, Tarling points out that clients are already using AI to draft documents. Lawyer interviews quoted in the article show mixed reactions: some see cost-sensitive clients turning to AI for first drafts, while others emphasize that these drafts still contain errors and require careful review. Tarling also describes growing client skepticism about lawyers using AI, even though legal-specific tools trained on verified databases exist and offer stronger guardrails.

Legal clients are arriving better informed but not necessarily better guided. Firms should be ready to evaluate AI-generated materials, explain the risks of consumer tools, and demonstrate the advantage of lawyer-led, verified research. Positioning legal-specific AI as part of a trustworthy, efficient workflow can help firms meet rising expectations while reinforcing the irreplaceable value of licensed counsel.
