Mastering the LinkedIn Algorithm: Building Visibility Through Thought Leadership

With more than one billion users posting daily, LinkedIn remains a crowded space. Yet, unlike other platforms, success does not hinge on virality. As Emily Knoll of Good2bSocial explains, the LinkedIn algorithm prioritizes relevance, authority, and professional engagement, creating opportunities for law firms to strengthen their presence and thought leadership.

The algorithm functions through a three-step process: content is first assessed for quality, then tested with a small segment of a user’s network, and finally expanded based on relevance and engagement. To avoid being flagged as low-quality, Knoll recommends limiting hashtags to a few, tagging only relevant individuals, and spacing posts by at least 12 hours. The first hour after posting is especially critical, with substantive comments and shares driving broader visibility.

Recent 2025 updates have sharpened LinkedIn’s focus on expertise. The platform now rewards consistent thought leadership, penalizes engagement bait, and favors content formats such as text posts, videos, and carousels over external links. Posts that earn recognition as valuable insights are more likely to expand reach across second- and third-degree connections.

For law firms, the most effective content includes legal analysis, industry commentary, visual storytelling, and resources like compliance checklists. Timing also matters: Knoll notes that posts made on Tuesday mornings and Thursday evenings tend to see stronger engagement.

The LinkedIn algorithm rewards firms that consistently share original insights, generate meaningful discussion, and engage directly with their networks. Those who treat LinkedIn as a platform for credibility, not quick clicks, position their attorneys as trusted industry authorities
