Practice Groups That Use Empowerment as an Advantage
According to a Law Vision article by Susan Raridon Lambreth, empowered leadership within practice groups is increasingly central to high-performing law firms. As firms evolve their organizational models, many are shifting toward structures that treat practice groups as business units. In such firms, practice group leaders (PGLs) do more than coordinate; they are accountable executives with real authority over group strategy, performance, and development. This shift requires thoughtful alignment of responsibility, authority, and support.
Lambreth says that in business unit–driven firms, empowered PGLs play a pivotal role in setting strategy, overseeing financials, managing talent, leading business development, and integrating laterals. They also have meaningful input into partner compensation, based on their insight into both quantifiable metrics and qualitative contributions.
These leaders are not left to operate in a vacuum, but report to senior leadership and are held accountable through structured performance discussions. This clear reporting framework fosters alignment with firmwide goals and helps address challenges before they escalate.
To ensure success, Lambreth says PGLs must be supported. High-performing firms provide dedicated business professionals, training, data tools, and operational infrastructure. This support allows leaders to focus on strategy and growth rather than administrative hurdles. Empowerment also hinges on clear metrics for success, including client satisfaction, innovation, and collaboration, not just revenue or billable hours.
The key takeaway is that delegation without authority is not leadership. If your firm wants stronger practice group performance, it must go beyond assigning responsibility. That includes providing the structure, support, and clarity necessary to lead. Without this, even the most capable PGLs will struggle to move the needle.
